Developed by Rogue Snail, Hell Clock is a fast-paced roguelike action role-playing game that takes place in a dark fantasy rendition of the War of Canudos in Brazil in the 19th century. In order to survive hellish hordes, players must develop devastating skill combinations, race against an actual ticking time, and unlock permanent improvements as they navigate Purgatory.
The Mechanic of Tick-Tock
The literal countdown timer in the upper-left corner of the screen is the main source of suspense in the game. Usually, a run has a time limit of seven minutes, so you have to strike a balance between the urgent necessity to go to the boss and the desire to farm enemies for XP and gold. You are immediately ejected from the arena if the clock reaches zero. However, you can extend the countdown and beat bosses to gain valuable seconds to prolong the run. The game also has a Relaxed Mode that does away with the timer entirely if you’d rather take a more laid-back approach.
Fight and Construct Crafting
Hell Clock’s combat is isometric and frantic. Pajeú, a revived soldier with a pistol and a variety of mana-fuelled powers, is under your control. You gain experience and level-up options as you defeat enormous waves of undead foes. You have to decide quickly whether to fairly distribute your levelling or stack upgrades into one or two key skills for devastating power. With the enormous Cursed War update, the game now has over 80 distinct relics that drastically alter how your talents work, enabling highly customised and powerful builds.
Advance Features
- The Ticking Timer: Your run ends when the clock literally counts down to zero. To extend your delve, you must either fight bosses or obtain time extensions.
- Diablo-Style Looting & Build Crafting: Gather equipment, gold, and ancient relics, then level up to receive blessings and benefits unique to your run.
- Campaign and Endgame in Four Acts: In addition to difficult endgame systems like the Endless Nightmare, the four acts of the plot describe Pajeú’s struggle to save his mentor.
- Accessibility Settings: Offers several levels of difficulty, such as Hardcore Mode (permanent death) and Relaxed Mode (which totally disables the timer).
